Attractive, unusual antique Chinese brush-container. It is made of bamboo and has a wooden stand and wooden top panel.
Carved on four sides with a tea-hose scene at front and feasting scholars at reverse. Chinese characters at left and right – 2 lines from a poem by the Tang-Dynasty poet Li Shangyin (c. 813–858).
What makes this brush container unusual is the way the reverse side has been carved which makes the scholars seated behind the bamboo poles.
The brush-container is from early last century.
15,7 x 14 x 16,5 cm (6,4 x 5,5 x 6,8 inches). It is in good condition with a few minor surface fissures.
Appealing old patina, well carved.
